First Principles Thinking: Mental Models for Thinking Clearly and Making Better Decisions

Most of what we believe, we inherited.

From family, school, culture, and institutions, we absorb assumptions long before we learn to examine them. Some remain useful. Others persist only because no one has questioned them. We make confident decisions on foundations we never chose.

In First Principles Thinking, Walter Dimon shows how to strip problems down to their governing principles, separate real constraints from inherited conventions, and rebuild understanding from the ground up. Beginning with the hidden patterns that shape judgment, he develops first principles thinking as a disciplined method of reduction and reconstruction, then shows where it works, where it fails, and when other modes of thought are needed.

Along the way, he connects the method to root cause analysis, cognitive distortions, inversion, systems thinking, and pattern recognition, showing how clearer judgment comes not from one tool used everywhere, but from knowing what kind of problem you are facing and how to think about it well.

For readers who want stronger judgment, not borrowed conclusions.

"The hardest assumptions to question are the ones that feel like facts."
