The Secret Codes of the Mind: From Medieval Philosophy to the Enlightenment, Volume IV, Part Three is an academic study of Enlightenment philosophy and the relationship between public criticism and the private moral order of the Masonic lodge. It follows eighteenth-century critique as it moves from religion and politics into education, law, and the conduct of life. Jean-Jacques Rousseau redirects this suspicion toward civilization itself. His accounts of inequality, dependence, education, the social contract, and the general will converge on the question of whether political society can restore the freedom it has helped to destroy.

Montesquieu treats law as arising from the conditions of a particular society and studies how power can be constrained through institutional counterweights. Denis Diderot, through the Encyclopédie, presents the circulation of knowledge as a form of resistance to censorship and intellectual authority. Grigory Skovoroda situates freedom outside institutional life, locating it in self-knowledge, spiritual independence, and labor suited to the person who performs it.

The study then examines Freemasonry as a moral philosophy articulated through the language of building. The rough ashlar, the Temple of Solomon, and the legend of Hiram are analyzed as figures for character, moral order, fidelity, and mortality. The Grand Lodge tradition that emerged in London in 1717 carried these symbols into institutional life, making ritual, discipline, and shared obligation instruments of ethical formation.

The lodge also developed as a voluntary association structured by freedom of conscience, regulated sociability, and networks extending across political borders and into the revolutionary worlds of America and France. The analysis separates documented networks and political participation from later legends of concealed authority. It then tests the language of universal brotherhood against exclusions shaped by rank, religion, gender, race, and empire in eighteenth-century society.

Organized as Module VII: The Age of Enlightenment, the volume combines historical exposition with sustained philosophical analysis.
