Duke and Toby know a surprise is coming, but they have no idea what to expect.
When Andrea and Alan return home with Maverick, a little yellow Lab puppy, Toby is thrilled to have someone new to play with. Duke is excited too, but he quickly realizes that Maverick is frightened, confused, and missing the family he has always known.
Everything is new to Maverick. The house smells different. The nighttime sounds are unfamiliar. Even the farm, with its gardens, chickens, ducks, geese, and goats, feels strange at first. Duke understands that Maverick cannot be rushed. He stays close when the puppy wakes in the night, answers his questions honestly, and gives him room when he needs it. Toby takes a different approach. He talks, jokes, and does everything he can to make Maverick smile.
As the days pass, Duke and Toby begin showing Maverick around the homestead. They introduce him to the garden, the animals, and the places that mean the most to their family. One of those places is Toshi's tree, planted in memory of a dog they still love and remember. There, Maverick begins to understand that joining a new family does not mean he has to forget his mom, his sisters, or the life he had before.
Duke and Toby Get a Little Brother is a warm, honest story about bringing home a new puppy and giving him the patience he needs to feel safe. It follows three dogs as they learn how to become brothers, how to make room for someone new, and how a place that once felt unfamiliar can slowly begin to feel like home.
Part of the Brothers Forever series, this illustrated story is written for children who love dogs, farms, family stories, and books about kindness, change, belonging, and the bond between siblings.
