I didn't set out to write a book about digital sovereignty. I set out to survive.

In 1954, psychologists James Olds and Peter Milner discovered that rats with electrodes wired to their brain's pleasure center would press a lever up to 7,000 times an hour - choosing stimulation over food, water, even sleep. Some pressed until they collapsed.

The difference between those rats and us? They had electrodes surgically implanted. We paid for the privilege of putting the lever in our own pocket.
