Mara works for the Office of Civic Continuity, reconciling bodies with files in a country where citizenship has a genotype. Her amber status has always been reviewable. Her husband, Theo, was "returned" to a homeland that was never his. Mara kept her head down because compliance kept their daughter, Nadia, safe.

Then a renewal swab exposes private health data and tightens the review around an inherited gap in the family record.

To close that record, the Office needs one final genetic anchor from Mara's dying grandmother. The request is voluntary. The consequences are not. Every form lets Mara pass the next decision to someone else-until protecting Nadia means choosing whether to complete the machinery's harm with her own hand. Solomon's handwritten ledger can preserve the names of people the system erased. It cannot make the state honor them.
