About this book

Iñaki Ábalos presents the quintessence of his thinking about architecture and the future of the trade.

In his new book Absolute Beginners, acclaimed Spanish architect Iñaki Ábalos explores forms of innovation in architecture. Drawing on diverse materials elaborated during the twenty years since the publication of his best-known book, The Good Life, Ábalos examines questions centered on how and why architectural creation--at least the kind that arouses the greatest cultural interest--is strongly linked to philosophical thought, especially to the essay and the aphorism. He guides us to an understanding of why innovation--as happens in philosophy--is inextricably linked to reflection on the past and to the emergence of new ways of appropriating old problems.

Absolute Beginners is a single essay written with effort and passion, made for the pure pleasure of composing a new and complex work and understanding the source materials as necessary fragments while remaining open to adjustments, changes, and bridges between them. Ábalos organizes his materials like a piece of music into a cohesive composition, to the delight and insight of his readers.

Louis I. Kahn in Conversation: Interviews with John W. Cook and Heinrich Klotz, 1969-70
In 1969 and 1970, Louis I. Kahn (1901-1974)--one of America's greatest 20th-century architects--participated in a series of interviews with a young German architectural historian, Heinrich Klotz, then a visiting professor at Yale University, and John W. Cook, who was teaching architecture at the Yale Divinity School. Louis I. Kahn in Conversation provides the first full edited transcript of these candid, illuminating interviews, which provide remarkable insights into Kahn's philosophy of architecture. The conversations touch on many of his iconic works, including the unbuilt City Tower Project for Philadelphia, the Yale University Art Gallery, the First Unitarian Church in Rochester, and major international projects then under construction, as well as the Yale Center for British Art, Kahn's final building, on which he was beginning work at the time. Illustrated with dozens of plans, drawings, and photographs, the book also features an introduction by Jules David Prown, the first director of the Yale Center for British Art, who recommended Kahn as its architect.

Distributed for the Yale Center for British Art, in association with Manuscripts and Archives, Sterling Memorial Library, Yale University and the Architectural Archives of the University of Pennsylvania

Architecture Inserted (English)
This book features the advanced studios of Chris Perry, Eric Bunge and Mimi Hoang, and Liza Fior with Katherine Clarke assisted by Andrei Harwell. The research and projects grapple with the issues of how to insert new pieces of architecture both as infrastructural and individual cultural buildings, into sites where existing physical and social issues are at conflict. The design solutions in each case--Cern headquarters in Geneva, the Périphérique of Paris, and the London 2012 Olympic site--unify the urban design and piece together the sites as bits of urban acupuncture creating new amenities and resources for the future. The book includes interviews with the architects about the work of their professional offices and essays on the themes of their advanced studios.
