Emerging Literatures

Emerging Literatures brings together fifteen essays concerned with different modes of literary discursivity emanating from the African Continent. At the intersection of oral and written forms, of indigenous practices and European models, of politics, literature and language, the question of the status of literature as legitimizing force in peoples' struggle for socio-political self-determination is posed again. Thus the term emergent derived from a comparative over-view of literary history becomes inextricably linked to the notion of emergency, a state of crisis.
