History of Indonesia: Tracing an Archipelagic Legacy (Skriuwer.com Edition) ((Skriuwer.com Edition))

Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago, home to over 270 million people spread across more than 17,000 islands, and the site of one of the most diverse and layered histories in Southeast Asia. The History of Indonesia traces the story of this vast nation from its ancient Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms and the spread of Islam through the centuries of Dutch colonial rule, the Japanese occupation, the independence struggle, and the complex politics of the modern Indonesian republic.

The book covers the major empires and kingdoms that shaped the archipelago - Srivijaya, Majapahit, the Sultanate of Mataram - before turning to the arrival of the Portuguese and Dutch, the VOC monopoly, the colonial period, and the independence movement led by Sukarno and Hatta. It also examines the New Order era under Suharto, the transition to democracy in 1998, and the challenges facing Indonesia today. The writing is clear and accessible throughout.
