Given that working with geographic information systems (GIS) forms an important foundation for various areas of a hydrologist's work, the 'General Hydrology' module at TU Dresden offers a practical exercise on how to use them. This exercise focuses on analysing the morphology of a river catchment and determining key catchment parameters as a basis for hydrological project work. Furthermore, the module involves establishing a precipitation-runoff relationship and applying system hydrological methods. As part of this work, it was investigated whether this exercise could be carried out using the free software QGIS, rather than ArcGIS, which involves licence costs.
