Naming of traffic areas in urban areas

This book highlights the great significance of geographical names, and specifically the names of public spaces, for society as a whole as well as for individuals. Drawing on a study of Austria's largest urban centres, it reveals the structures underlying the process of naming public spaces in urban areas and explains the reasons for the structural complexity of these naming processes. By revealing the most common naming principles in the designation of traffic areas, the historical, social, political and economic motivations of decision-makers in society are brought to light. The study highlights similarities and differences between the federal states and demonstrates Vienna's leading role in the naming of traffic areas in Austria. An international comparison of Austria's naming practices with examples from other countries reveals country-specific similarities as well as differences.
