What drives someone to turn to terrorism? How did a student movement go so far off the rails that radical groups such as the Red Army Faction or the Tupamaros were able to emerge in West Berlin? The group that emerged most prominently from the radicalised student movement was the Red Army Faction, which managed to survive into the 1990s and kept the Federal Republic on tenterhooks in the 1970s.This paper examines the triggers, such as the shooting of Rudi Dutschke, and the development into terrorist organisations.
