Ferlo (Senegalese Sahel), located in a semi-arid zone in northern Senegal, is an area primarily devoted to pastoralism, where the use of pastoral land is most difficult. The pastoral environment is also a key issue in the rural micro-economy. For example, it provides 55% to 75% of rural income in Senegal. Unfavorable climatic conditions (low rainfall, successive droughts) lead to the restriction and scarcity of pastoral areas. However, the viability and sustainability of pastoral activities in this semi-arid zone are the result of a whole range of strategies for managing these areas that are practiced by livestock farmers.
