This study was based on a survey conducted amongst boarding students-the children of smallholder farmers and rural workers-at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Sul (IFSul), Pelotas Campus - Visconde da Graça (CaVG); the aim was to examine the reasons that lead them to return to their place of origin or not, within a broader context of discussions on rural development, sustainability and the continuity of family farming.
