Bone Augmentation in Omfs

Bone augmentation is a fundamental procedure in OMFS used to restore deficient alveolar bone for functional and esthetic rehabilitation, especially prior to dental implant placement. Bone loss may occur due to trauma, periodontal disease, tumor resection, or prolonged edentulism.Autogenous bone grafts remain the gold standard due to their osteogenic potential, while allografts, xenografts, and alloplasts serve as alternatives. Guided bone regeneration (GBR) using barrier membranes is widely practiced to promote selective bone growth. Other techniques include sinus floor elevation, ridge splitting, and distraction osteogenesis.Recent advances such as growth factors and 3D-guided surgery have improved outcomes and predictability. However, complications like graft resorption and infection may occur. Overall, bone augmentation plays a crucial role in successful maxillofacial reconstruction and implant therapy.
