The corpus of this study is the novel *Pedro Páramo* by the Mexican writer Juan Rulfo. The analysis is conducted from a hermeneutic perspective and draws on studies of realism as a theoretical movement, as well as discussions concerning magical realism. An understanding of narrative categories, setting and characters has facilitated a broader exploration of thematic issues related to magic and illusion, which are important aspects of Mexican culture.
