The aim of the study is to determine the dendrometric parameters and characteristics of woody plants of forage value in the Sudanian zone of Benin. The potential and pastoral management practices for four target species were assessed on the basis of vegetation surveys. A systematic inventory was carried out in natural stands to assess the characteristics of the plant communities and the target species. Species richness ranges from 34 to 81 species, density from 66.67 to 93.44 stems/ha and basal area from 10.71 to 25.87 m²/ha. The abundance and quality of regeneration indicate that the survival of the ecosystem's dynamics is compromised. Logging practices reveal that 98% (Khaya senegalensis), 91% (Pterocarpus erinaceus) and 86% (Afzelia africana) are mutilated, even though edible parts (leaves and flowers) are still available. Mature trees are severely pruned and young trees are affected by direct browsing. The sustainable management of forage trees in this region requires domestication, the promotion of community plant gardens and intensive agroforestry.
