Role of Platelet Concentrates in Periodontal Therapy

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by the progressive destruction of the supporting structures of teeth, including gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone. If left untreated, it can lead to tooth mobility, tooth loss, and impairment of oral function. Conventional periodontal therapy primarily aims to control infection and inflammation through scaling and root planing (SRP), surgical debridement, and maintenance therapy. Although these approaches effectively reduce disease progression, they often fail to achieve true regeneration of lost periodontal tissues. Consequently, regenerative periodontal therapy has emerged as an important area of research, with platelet concentrates gaining significant attention due to their ability to enhance wound healing and tissue regeneration.Platelet concentrates (PCs) are autologous blood-derived products prepared by centrifuging a patient's blood to concentrate platelets, growth factors, fibrin, and sometimes leukocytes. These concentrates act as biological reservoirs containing numerous growth factors and cytokines involved in tissue repair.
