Aristotle and the Middle Ages

Aristotelianism is an ancient school of thought that had a huge influence on the posterity of its founder, Aristotle. In this vast post-Aristotelian period, the present article focuses on the Middle Ages. The reasons for choosing this period are essentially pedagogical, since it represents a hinge between antiquity and modern and contemporary times. Starting with a few of Aristotle's predecessors, the article develops the thought of this native of Stagira, whose impact on medieval times is represented by the figures of Saint Thomas Aquinas and the leading authors of Arab philosophy at the time. Aristotelianism is a multi-dimensional system that enabled theologians and philosophers of the Middle Ages to redefine the fundamental concepts that underpinned their various theories.
