George Eliot's Artistry

This book presents a systematic scholarly investigation of the character system and speech poetics in Daniel Deronda - George Eliot's final and most ambitious novel, widely regarded as the pinnacle of Victorian realism. Approached from the perspective of Uzbek philological scholarship, the study combines literary-theoretical analysis with close readings of the novel's central and peripheral characters, tracing the evolution of Eliot's authorial method from her early realist fiction to her mature psychological prose. The first chapter situates Daniel Deronda within the broader literary process of the Victorian era, examining the development of the novel genre, the emergence of psychological realism, and the critical reception of Eliot's work in English, Russian, and Uzbek scholarship. The second chapter undertakes a detailed analysis of the novel's image system, exploring how Eliot constructs her characters - Gwendolen Harleth, Daniel Deronda, Henley Grandcourt, and Mirah Cohen - through portrait, dialogue, interior monologue, and symbolic imagery.
