The Baroque period is a significant era in Western art music, during which the oboe developed more rapidly than before and a wide variety of works for the oboe were composed. Owing to the limitations of the oboe's timbre and playing technique, there were few solo works in the later stylistic periods, namely the Classical and Romantic eras. There is little solo literature for the oboe in the Romantic period. In the 21st century, the oboe underwent further development, in line with the aspirations of its players and the demand for contemporary, emotionally charged music. The Baroque period marked the first high point for the oboe, not only in terms of form but also in terms of the works themselves.
