Tourism's Contributions to Growth and Development

As Africa's top destination with 14.5 million tourists in 2023 and a contribution of over 15% to the national GDP, Morocco has made tourism a central pillar of its economic development.This book analyzes, across ten chapters, the sector's contributions to inclusive growth and sustainable development. While the macroeconomic performance is undeniable, the benefits remain unevenly distributed: excessive geographic concentration, a massive informal sector, and risks of overtourism at heritage sites. Promising initiatives-women's argan cooperatives, community-based tourism in the Atlas and Drâa regions, and the rehabilitation of UNESCO-listed medinas-demonstrate that a more equitable model is possible.Drawing inspiration from best practices in Rwanda, Costa Rica, and Turkey, the book proposes a new Moroccan tourism model based on inclusive governance, local linkages, ecological transition, and vocational training-with the 2030 World Cup as a historic opportunity for transformation.
