Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases

The classification of periodontal diseases and conditions is fundamental to periodontal diagnosis, treatment planning, research, education, and communication. As advances in periodontal biology, microbiology, immunology, genetics, and diagnostic technologies have enhanced our understanding of disease, classification systems have evolved from descriptive categories to evidence-based frameworks that incorporate disease severity, complexity, progression, and risk assessment. The 2017 World Workshop Classification further expanded this framework by including peri-implant diseases and conditions. This book provides a concise overview of the evolution of periodontal disease classification, from its historical foundations to contemporary concepts. It examines the scientific basis, clinical applications, strengths, and limitations of successive classification systems while highlighting current challenges and future directions in the field.I sincerely thank the clinicians, researchers, educators, professional organizations, and patients whose contributions have shaped modern periodontal classification.
