Get started with ISO monitoring: a turnkey solution!

The monitoring of surgical site infections and the reporting of infection rates to the relevant medical and surgical teams are fundamental elements of any prevention programme aimed at combating these infections. The aim of this project, which forms part of the assessment of the Master's thesis in hospital hygiene, was to propose a coherent information system for the surveillance of surgical site infections (SSIs) across all departments at the Charles Nicole University Hospital in Tunis. A protocol, largely based on the French ISO-RAISIN protocol and the European HAISSI protocol, was drawn up, setting out in detail the various concepts used in the surveillance. A methodological guide, integrated into the protocol, was proposed, detailing the organisational and procedural aspects of the surveillance. A computerised database management application, based on the Epi Info 3.5.4 software and fully customised to meet the needs of the surveillance programme, was developed. The application enables the entry of surveillance records, the checking of data quality and the generation of reports by department and for the institution as a whole.
