Fifth Dimension

Spirituality: the concept is unsettling, the word is frightening. Its connotations limit its use in a society that advocates secularism without really grasping its definition. Yet spirituality is the realm of personal freedom, of genuine relationships, and of true identity. It concerns everyone, as it is indeed the fifth dimension of the person, following the biological, psychological, sociological and cultural dimensions. Spirituality is most often activated during an existential crisis. It is then that we ask ourselves who we are, why we exist, and how we should live. This text therefore explores what the spiritual dimension of the person entails. It may be of interest to anyone, although there is a particular connection to the role of the counsellor, therapist or carer, and more specifically to the nursing profession. The approach aims to be accessible yet thought-provoking; the text contains numerous allusions to philosophical thought (in the form of dialogue, certain concepts, etc.), but the tone is not that of a scholar peppered with references to authors: the allusions are there, but they are subtle. It is therefore up to each reader to find what they are looking for.
