Appearance in the Thought of Hannah Arendt

This essay proposes a rereading of Hannah Arendt's thought by considering aesthetics not as a philosophy of art, but as a theory of appearance. It argues that politics rests on conditions of visibility, exposure, judgment, and plurality. The individual exists politically only by appearing in a shared public space, where identity, action, and recognition are constructed. Action possesses a theatrical dimension: to act is to show oneself to others in a pluralistic world where the meaning of acts depends on the narratives and judgments of others. Recognition is thus linked to conditions of visibility, while their unequal distribution produces forms of exclusion. Inspired by Immanuel Kant, the citizen appears as a spectator capable of exercising a reflective judgment oriented toward common sense. Finally, the essay shows that politics can be understood as an activity of judgment in the face of singular situations, while highlighting the limits of the aesthetic model when confronted with violence and decision. Arendtian thought is thus summarized in a dynamic: to appear, to judge, and to share.
