This book offers the lectures of the European Symposium Kos 2000, that was held from Monday, September 25th. to Wednesday, September 27th. 2000 in Kos. Beyond the Symptoms, a medicine is formed that is oriented towards the ill human being, a medicine that develops new paradigms and that, at the same time, contemplates its roots. So this symposium included different topics: lectures over the general subject and over medical history, and also topic-oriented workshops. It was a special concern to discuss how being aware of paradigms can effect the daily practice in a constructive and creative manner. Kos is the island of Hippocrates. Hippocrates is not only the founder of medical science but a profound philosopher, a true humanist and an excellent moral teacher. One of Hippocrates' basic priciples is benevolence or "philanthrophy". Only a benevolent man can be an excellent doctor; for, according to Hippocrates, he whose soul is full of love tries to apply himself to his art in order to learn as much as possible, so that by perfecting himself he can offer a more positive service to the sufferer. By the inspiration of Hippocrates, this book will stimulate a metamorphosis of the modern therapist at the beginning of a new century.
