Mosby's Rangers: A Record Of The Operations Of The Forty-Third Battalion Of Virginia Cavalry From It

They struck from the mist and vanished before the bluecoats could turn. These men rode in shadows. In Mosby's Rangers: A Record Of The Operations Of The Forty-Third Battalion Of Virginia Cavalry From Its Organization To The Surrender, James J. Williamson, a veteran trooper, offers an unvarnished confederate cavalry memoir and detailed civil war unit history of one of the war's most elusive commands. From scattered farms and back roads to sudden guerrilla raids in Virginia, he records how 1860s Virginia cavalry lived, fought, and endured under the legendary "Gray Ghost" confederate cavalry leader, John S. Mosby. Blending personal observation with painstaking documentation, Williamson crafts a classic civil war narrative that illuminates confederate partisan warfare and the landscape of the american civil war virginia theatre. Skirmishes, scouting, captures and reprisals are set against portraits of comrades and civilians, giving depth to any john s mosby biography and offering a rich military history reference book for civil war buffs, researchers, and re-enactors. Long valued by historians of mosbys rangers civil war operations, it stands as a rare inside view of a unit whose daring tactics reshaped ideas of mounted warfare.
