Genuine Declaration Of William Sutherland, Hangman At Irvine: Wherein His Knowledge Of The Scripture

A hangman turns witness against the powerful, and the story that follows is stark, brief, and unforgettable. His role was executioner. In "The Genuine Declaration Of William Sutherland, Hangman At Irvine", a working man of the scaffold breaks his silence to offer a scottish religious testimony drawn from Scripture, conscience and hard experience. Set amid the religious persecution in Scotland in the late seventeenth century, this historical christian pamphlet records Sutherland's knowledge of the Scriptures, his courage under persecution, his demeanour towards his persecutors, and the barbarous treatment he endured at Ayr and Irvine. For readers interested in scottish covenanters persecution history and 17th century execution narrative, it is a rare, unvarnished voice from below the gallows. As a compact primary source for 17th century Scotland history, the complete William Sutherland declaration speaks directly to christian history readers, genealogists, and scottish history students, while rewarding classic-literature collectors who follow scottish persecution narratives collection and other fragile pamphlets of the era. It captures the moral tensions of duty, faith, and fear in a brutalised society. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure.
