Rejected Addresses: Or, The New Theatrum Poetarum

Before the curtain rises, the poets are heckled. Rejected Addresses turns the grand announcements of the British stage into a gleeful satirical poetry collection of mock-prologues, squibs, and set-piece lampoons. Wit, wicked, and wonderfully sharp. In this parody verse anthology, James Smith reimagines the voices of his day with deft mimicry and a theatre-lover's ear, skewering fashions in taste as readily as egos backstage - perfect for a quick laugh or a slow savour. Each piece slips into a fresh metre and manner, turning stage addresses into a miniature gallery of styles where the punchline is craft as much as cheek itself. Rooted in Regency era London and the bustle of Drury Lane, these Drury Lane lampoons sit at the crossroads of British theatre satire and literary burlesque poems. The collection's romantic poet parodies and sly nods to earlier models echo an Augustan style satire, proving how elastic English verse can be when pushed into comedy. First published in the early 19th century, Rejected Addresses became a touchstone of Regency humour writing, a snapshot of how the stage, the book trade, and celebrity poets collided. Ideal for casual readers who enjoy parody, and for English poetry collectors who prize the history of performance on the page - especially anyone who loves the annotated classic edition tradition. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
