Familiar Strangers

They're enrolled. They attend. They'll graduate on schedule. So why does something feel missing?

The Familiar Strangers is a work of creative nonfiction that looks past the register and the results sheet to ask what's actually happening inside the modern student experience. Drawing on years of conversations across countries, institutions, and subjects, author Ajay Gavit identifies twelve recognisable "types" of students - from those going through the motions to those chasing a credential that buys them time, from the ones who accumulate qualifications like armour to the rare few who learn simply for its own sake.

Structured in four parts - Adrift, The Bargain, The Long Way Around, and True North - the book moves from disengagement toward purpose, using richly drawn portraits - some direct accounts, others carefully reshaped to protect the people who spoke honestly - rather than statistics or policy prescriptions. It doesn't offer easy fixes. It offers recognition - the uncomfortable, clarifying kind that comes from seeing yourself, or someone you love, described precisely by a stranger.

Part observation, part quiet reckoning, this is a book for students, parents, educators, and anyone who has ever wondered whether "doing fine" and "actually learning" are the same thing.
