Myths of Babylonia and Assyria

From the shadowed ziggurats of ancient Mesopotamia to the windswept ruins along the Tigris, the world of the Babylonians and Assyrians pulses with enigmatic gods, epic struggles, and the echoes of vanished civilisations. Here, myth and history entwine: legendary heroes cross paths with deities, and the fate of empires hangs in the balance between the sacred and the mortal. This work draws readers deep into the heart of the ancient Near East, illuminating the mythological traditions that shaped the beliefs and destinies of early societies. Through tales of the Epic of Gilgamesh, the enigmatic pantheon of Mesopotamian gods, and the enduring legacies of Sumerian legends, the narrative unfolds with an authority grounded in archaeological history and a fascination for the roots of ancient religions. The storytelling is both scholarly and evocative, offering not only a careful exploration of historical myths but also a sense of the awe and wonder that these stories inspired in their original audiences. The reader is guided through the labyrinthine beliefs of Babylonia and Assyria, tracing how myth and ritual reflected the anxieties, hopes, and ambitions of some of humanity's earliest city-builders.
