151st Field Artillery Brigade

Dawn breaks over the battered fields of France, and the thunder of artillery signals another day on the front. Amidst the mud, wire, and ceaseless tension, a National Guard unit from Minnesota navigates not only the enemy's fire but the unrelenting demands of modern warfare. This is a firsthand account of the American Expeditionary Forces at their most exposed-where the strategies of artillery tactics in World War One meet the raw uncertainty of survival. The narrative moves with the urgency of battle, immersing readers in the daily realities of a field artillery brigade: the meticulous preparations before each barrage, the camaraderie and friction among doughboys, and the constant negotiation between discipline and chaos. Through personal narrative and detailed observation, the book traces the journey of a military unit shaped by its origins, tested in the crucible of conflict, and ultimately defined by its role in military operations in France. What sets this work apart is its rare blend of immediacy and reflection. The author's eye for the telling detail-whether in the mud-caked wheels of a gun carriage or the quiet moments between bombardments-offers a window into both the grand sweep and the intimate costs of war. It stands as a significant contribution to world war one history, capturing not only the broader movements of armies but the lived experience of those who served. For readers drawn to military unit history, the evolution of the US Army in France, or the enduring legacy of the National Guard, this volume provides a compelling and authentic perspective.
