Political Thought of Ibn Taymiyyah

The Political Thought of Ibn Taymiyyah presents a systematic academic analysis of one of the most influential jurists of classical Islam. Grounded in textual evidence and historical context, the study examines Ibn Taymiyyah's conception of governance, political authority, justice, and public responsibility within the framework of Qur'ān and Sunnah.

Rather than presenting political theory in modern ideological terms, the book situates Ibn Taymiyyah's thought within the established disciplines of uṣūl al-fiqh, siyāsah sharʿiyyah (lawful governance), and classical Sunni orthodoxy. It explores his understanding of leadership (imāmah), the role of the ruler, accountability before Allah, enforcement of justice, prevention of oppression, and preservation of communal order.

Key themes include:

• • The relationship between religion and governance
  • The juristic limits of political authority
  • Public welfare (maṣlaḥah) and prevention of harm
  • Commanding right and forbidding wrong within lawful bounds
  • Obedience, dissent, and ethical restraint
  • The integration of moral theology with statecraft

The study also situates Ibn Taymiyyah within his historical environment, addressing the Mongol invasions, internal fragmentation, and legal debates of his time without projecting contemporary political frameworks onto his thought.

This volume is intended for scholars, graduate students, and institutional libraries engaged in Islamic legal theory, political thought, and intellectual history. It contributes to a historically disciplined understanding of governance in classical Islam while avoiding ideological reinterpretation.
