VOLUME V - THE PROPHETS (PART I)
The Word of God in clear, living English - Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Lamentations
The prophets did not speak of themselves. They were sent, and they carried the word of the living God to a people who had forgotten Him - in warning, in pleading, and in promise.
This volume gathers the first of their writings. Isaiah reaches from the wickedness of Judah to the Servant who bears the sins of many. Jeremiah wept while he prophesied, and was not spared what he foretold. Lamentations is the elegy over a fallen city that still turns to God at its close: "Turn us back to You, O Yahweh, and we will return."
Volume V of the Master Standard Version presents these books in contemporary English that can be read aloud, studied, and understood without a commentary at hand - while remaining faithful to the meaning of the sacred text.
About the Master Standard Version
The MSV is a revision of the American Standard Version of 1901, a translation long valued for its accuracy and now in the public domain. Its language has been renewed in the vocabulary and sentence structure of modern English: archaic and difficult expressions replaced with words in common use today, and long or involved sentences recast for clarity - always with care to preserve the sense of the original.
Reverence for God has guided every choice. Pronouns referring to God are capitalized, and contractions have been avoided throughout.
A word about the divine name: the Tetragrammaton (YHWH) is rendered throughout this edition as Yahweh. The ASV represented this name as "Jehovah"; this revision uses "Yahweh," which reflects the scholarly understanding of its original pronunciation. "Lord" is retained where it renders the Hebrew title Adonai.
In this volume - Isaiah (judgment and comfort, the Servant of Yahweh, the promise of a new creation) - Jeremiah (the weeping prophet, the fall of Jerusalem, the new covenant written on the heart) - Lamentations (five poems over the ruined city, ending in prayer)
Features - readable modern English - numbered chapters and verses - section headings adapted from the NKJV - generous type in a two-column setting - suitable for personal study, family reading, and the life of the Church
Volume VI continues with Ezekiel, Daniel, and the Twelve - Hosea to Malachi.
