In the ancient Mexican highlands, a small community lives beside a failing spring. They hunt deer and hare, gather roots and seeds, keep dogs near the fire, and guard the few kernels that may become food when the rains return.

Nai has learned to watch what others miss: a child nearing a broken slope, a mouse-hole beside stored seed, the small changes in earth that tell whether a plant may live. Ikan knows the ridge, the hunt, and the weight of the spear once carried by his dead brother. Together they stand between childhood and adulthood as their people face a choice that will shape every life in the valley: follow the old paths in search of water, or remain and risk everything on a fragile new way of living.

Then thirsty strangers come down from the ridge.

As the spring falls, seed disappears, old loyalties crack, and violence turns the water dark, Nai and Ikan must learn what it takes to protect a fire without letting fear make them cruel. Around them, children grow, dogs keep watch, storms remake the ground, and every decision leaves a mark.
