Summerville, South Carolina. Summer,1984. The kudzu is growing wrong.

Twelve-year-old Maddie Patterson knows three things: her dad's basement experiment is making the backyard strange, the new cat showed up like he was assigned to her, and the grown-ups are starting to smile too much. When a violet fog settles over town and the adults stop being themselves, Maddie and her two best friends are the only ones left who can see it happening.

Armed with a homemade weapon, a hundred-year-old silver coin, and a cat who knows more than any cat should, the Trio goes underground - literally - to cut their town free from something ancient, patient, and almost kind.
