First Nun to Open the Path: Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī

The untold story of the Great Mother of the Bhikkhunī Saṅgha.

Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī was never merely the Buddha's foster mother. When doors were closed to women seeking full monastic ordination, she refused to disappear in silence. Cutting her hair and putting on ochre robes, she walked barefoot through scorching dust alongside five hundred courageous women to claim their rightful place in the holy life.

Blending historical rigor with deep devotional reverence, Venerable Gotamī recovers the voice, teachings, and miraculous spiritual realization of Buddhism's first bhikkhunī. The First Nun to Open the Path is a moving homage to a woman whose determination reshaped history forever.
