Some places know what they are.

A questionnaire arrives at Dock Meridian in the same comms packet as the coffee and the replacement seals. It's from Perimeter Systems, the inner-system consortium that has quietly owned the Dock for decades, and it wants capacity figures, maintenance schedules, revenue projections, and an operational status for three legacy drones that haven't had manufacturer support since 2097.

Operations manager Saoirse Vanthoorn works through the form until she reaches the equipment section. Then she closes it and writes something else - a document in her own voice, describing what the Dock is and does and why that matters to the outer system it's part of. The Dock's manager reads it and signs it without changing a word.

Perimeter sends an assessor to see what kind of place produces that kind of response.

The Ahanu, the supply freighter that has run the outer-system loop for fifteen years, brings more than the assessor. Its captain Yetunde has watched facilities like the Dock survive and change and disappear, and she has language for the outer system's losses that Saoirse doesn't have yet. Its engineer Dag notices the Dock the way people notice places they aren't sure they're allowed to love. And Ptolemy, the Dock's fourteen-year-old genetically adapted cat, begins his assessment of the newcomer within the first hour.

Warm, dry, and unhurried, This Particular Light is the final novel in the Dock Meridian series - a story about what it means to be accountable to something wider than the people in the same corridor, and what staying costs when you finally have to say so out loud.
