From 1968 to 1978, East Orange High School's boys basketball team went 243-30 - four state championships in five years, four straight Essex County Tournament titles, a 39-game winning streak, and a national ranking, all built on a .890 winning percentage most programs never approach in a single season, let alone a decade.

East Orange Basketball: The Hoosiers of the East traces how that happened - and argues it was never an accident. It starts with Washington Playground in the 1960s, where federal manpower investment and a Recreation Department led in part by tennis legend Althea Gibson built the infrastructure that produced a generation of players before any of them reached a varsity roster. It follows Coach Bob Lester's dynasty through its signature seasons, including the heartbreaking near-perfect 1974-75 "East Orange Express" and the four-year Essex County Tournament streak. It documents Clifford Scott High School's parallel dynasty - undefeated in every state final it ever played - and the only undefeated season, boys or girls, in East Orange basketball history: the 1980 Lady Panthers, 27-0.

The story doesn't stop in the 1970s. This book follows the pipeline into the present: Robert Cole's son R.J. Cole, now playing professional basketball in Italy after a BIG EAST career at UConn; Asante Gist, a Division 1 scoring record-holder and G League player; Joe Jordan's four-decade coaching arc across three institutions; and East Orange Campus High School's 2025-26 season, which ended one win from the state championship game under a new head coach with NBA pedigree and deep East Orange roots.

Written by Dr. Kenneth Nolan Daniels - an East Orange native, Washington Playground alumnus, and East Orange High School team captain who lived part of this history himself - this book makes a documented, sourced case that East Orange's basketball excellence was built deliberately, sustained across generations, and is still producing results today. It closes with a direct argument: that the city which proved this model works has earned the right to build the sports complex that could carry it into its next fifty years.
