Hours We Owe

Some debts are measured in money. Others are measured in years.
In 1958, twenty-four-year-old clockmaker Alden Rook makes a choice that will follow him for the rest of his life.
Before dawn, a fire tears through Bellwether's Riverglass Mill. The alarm fails. Six people die. Another man carries the blame.
And Alden says nothing.
Fifty-eight years later, Alden returns to the Ohio River town he once left behind. Older, widowed, and carrying more regret than luggage, he opens an unusual clock-repair shop on Main Street.
He works only on Tuesdays.
And instead of money, he asks each customer for a story.
What begins with broken watches and silent mantel clocks gradually becomes something Alden never intended: a gathering place for people carrying their own unfinished histories. A mother trying to rebuild a fractured family. A reporter who refuses to stop asking questions. A thirteen-year-old boy named Jonah whose fascination with mechanisms becomes an unexpected apprenticeship-and whose stubborn honesty challenges everything Alden has learned about guilt.
But some things cannot be repaired by replacing a spring or resetting a hand.
When traces of the Riverglass fire begin surfacing again, Alden must confront the truth he has spent nearly six decades trying to outlive. What happened at 4:17 that morning? Who was allowed to carry the blame? And when the truth finally belongs to everyone, can confession become something more difficult than forgiveness?
Can it become restitution?
The Hours We Owe is a moving literary novel about memory, grief, responsibility, unexpected friendship, and the quiet courage required to tell the truth after years of silence.
Tender without being sentimental and hopeful without offering easy answers, it asks a timeless question:
We cannot repair the hours already lost-but what will we do with the hours that remain?
