Science of a Working Farm

From the public road, a working farm looks like a pleasant arrangement between humanity and nature. There are fields, fences, barns, animals, tractors, and perhaps a farmhouse with a porch. The crops stand in orderly rows, the cattle appear relaxed, and an old pickup truck sits beside a shed as though it has nowhere particular to be. It is a picture of rural peace, provided nobody stops the car, opens the gate, or asks the person running the place how the morning is going.

The person operating the farm has probably been awake since before daylight. A cow has stepped through a fence. A water line has broken beneath the one patch of ground nobody wanted to dig up. The tractor has developed a warning light shaped like an object that does not exist anywhere else in the known universe. The weather forecast has changed three times, an employee is late, a delivery is missing, and something small but ambitious has eaten the first six rows of beans. It is not yet breakfast.
