Fourth grade has barely started, and Crumps is already in trouble.
Elliot "Crumps" Crumpton has heard the rumors. Fourth graders have to know their multiplication tables front and back. They have to deal with fractions. Eventually, somebody expects them to divide those fractions.
Crumps isn't completely sure what dividing fractions means, but it sounds dangerous.
And math is only the beginning.
On the very first bus ride of the year, school bully Brad Mixton challenges Crumps to the Five-Day Fourth Grade Survival Challenge. Crumps has to make it all the way to Friday without earning detention or getting sent to Principal Grimblebottom for something he actually did. He also has to pass Friday's multiplication check.
If Crumps wins, Brad has to call him Elliot for an entire week. If Crumps loses, Brad gets "naming rights." Crumps accepts.
His best friend Tucker immediately points out that this is a terrible idea.
Crumps appreciates the encouragement. Now he only has to survive five days of suspicious pranks, planted evidence, classroom disasters, multiplication panic, cafeteria trouble, his little sister Prissy, an enormous stuffed horse named Biscuit Thunderpants, and Brad's increasingly creative attempts to make him look guilty.
Luckily, Crumps has a plan. Unfortunately, Crumps having a plan is usually when things start going wrong.
Welcome to the 4th Grade is a fast, funny school adventure packed with friendship, ridiculous misunderstandings, kid-sized problems that become enormous disasters, and one fourth grader who is almost completely sort of sure he knows what he's doing.
Perfect for kids ages 8-10, developing readers, reluctant readers, and anyone who thinks school would be a lot easier without bullies, fractions, little sisters, and angry Chihuahuas.
Can Crumps survive the first week of fourth grade? Probably. Maybe. He only has to make it to Friday.
