In January 2020, author David C. Y. Edwards was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis aged 34. He felt despondent and hopeless as doctors had declared the disease incurable. However, upon realising in his spirit how Jesus Christ bore both sickness and disease in His body for him, by late spring of that year, every symptom was gone - no seizures, no vertigo, no muscle spasms, no pins and needles, no blurred vision, restored strength and balance. Then, on 13th November 2020, a bout of vertigo attacked him - but David, with his newfound understanding of his authority in Christ, rebuked it, and the whole episode lasted no longer than a minute, compared to the three months it would normally last even with medication. Six years later, he remains completely free.

Auntie Gertrude is the novel born from that experience.

Set in a fictional Ghanaian town called Suro Yareɛ - "Fear Sickness" - the story follows a quiet school cleaner who is diagnosed with leukaemia and responds in a way her entire community considers dangerous madness. Instead of seeking traditional healing or accepting her prognosis, she opens her Bible, speaks to the tumour growing on her arm, and declares what she has staked her life on: that Jesus Christ bore her sickness at Calvary. Already. Finished. Done.

As her body deteriorates and her community turns against her, as the town's fetish priest makes his own dramatic bid for healing and the youth of Suro Yareɛ begin to ask dangerous questions, Auntie Gertrude builds toward a confrontation that will force an entire community to decide what they truly believe about sickness, faith, and the power of God's Word.

The first book in The Director of Music Series. For everyone who has ever faced a diagnosis and wondered whether God's Word could really be trusted.
