Choir in the Walls: A Haunting Southern Gothic Novel of Black Community and Supernatural Secrets

Some prayers never reach heaven. They get trapped in the walls.

After laying the haint on Willow Street to rest, Mara Greene is determined to build a quieter life. But peace does not last long in Willow's Crossing.

When Mount Zion Baptist Church-the spiritual heart of the town-begins to sing on its own, Mara is pulled back into the kind of work she never wanted. Hymns echo through an empty sanctuary. Children hear unseen footsteps racing through the choir loft. And from deep within the plaster and brick, a chorus of voices rises to sing a song no one has rehearsed in decades.

Reverend Caleb knows that hymn.

He remembers the night it was last sung-the night the church chose silence over truth, respectability over reckoning. Now, the past that the elders tried to bury has returned, and it is no longer willing to wait in silence.

As the hauntings grow stronger, Mara must uncover a story Willow's Crossing has spent generations avoiding: a tragedy tied to the youth choir, a broken promise of protection, and a decision that still lingers in the church walls. With Grandma Lila's hard-won wisdom, Jamal's steady presence, and a congregation divided between shame and relief, Mara must do what this town has never truly done-speak the whole story out loud.

Because some ghosts do not want revenge. They want to be remembered. They want their names sung right.

The Choir in the Walls is a haunting and atmospheric follow-up to The Haint on Willow Street-a Southern supernatural novel steeped in ancestral memory, Black community, buried secrets, church politics, and the long echo of truth denied.
