Fat Violet: A Play in Three Acts

In Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night, Jamie Tyrone confesses to his brother that he chose the cheapest, homeliest woman in the house - "Fat Violet" - as proof of his own degradation. She is never seen. She never speaks.

This play gives her the stage.

Set on the waterfront of New London, Connecticut, in November 1912, Fat Violet is the story of a woman the American dramatic canon discarded - and the man who stumbled into her orbit too late to deserve what she offered him. Violet is broad-shouldered, steady, and not fat. She governs a wharf tavern with wit sharp enough to quiet a room and moral intelligence precise enough to shame a man into decency. When Jamie Tyrone walks in from the cold with city boots, whiskey in his chest, and trouble in his lungs, she sees him clearer than anyone in his famous father's house ever did.

What follows is a love story measured in bread and coal, mended shirts and unmade beds, a silver spoon no bigger than a child's, and the terrifying question of whether a man raised among actors can accept the ordinary life a woman of extraordinary courage lays at his feet.

Fat Violet is a major original work that stands fully on its own terms while engaging in profound conversation with one of the towering achievements of American theatre. It is a play about who gets to be the subject of tragedy, whose suffering the tradition has valued, and whose it has thrown away.

"Any fool can walk out. It's the staying costs."
