Senegal Parrot: A Complete Guide to Care, One-Person Loyalty & Bite Prevention

Fiercely loyal to one person - and sometimes fiercely hostile to everyone else. That's the Senegal Parrot in a nutshell.

The Senegal Parrot is a compact, intelligent, and deeply bonding companion that forms one of the strongest one-person attachments in the parrot world. For its chosen person, the Senegal is affectionate, playful, and endlessly entertaining. For everyone else? It can be a biting machine.

The Senegal's powerful beak - oversized for a bird of just 23 cm - delivers bites that are disproportionately painful. Bite prevention isn't optional with this species. It's essential.

Inside this guide, you'll discover:

Bite prevention - the essential chapter: why Senegals bite more than most comparably-sized parrots, the triggers (jealousy, territoriality, fear), body language that warns you, and proven techniques to reduce biting

One-person bonding: how to be the Senegal's favorite person while gradually building its tolerance for other family members, guests, and handling by strangers

The Poicephalus beak: understanding why this small bird has such a powerful bite, and how to manage a beak that can crush nutshells and fingers alike

Training a loyal bird: positive reinforcement methods that work with the Senegal's determined personality - including step-up reliability, recall, and confidence-building

Quiet but not silent: Senegals are among the quieter parrot species - realistic noise expectations for apartments and shared spaces

Diet and nutrition: balanced feeding for a small Poicephalus, fresh food essentials, and common dietary mistakes

Health and 25-30 year lifespan: bornavirus, aspergillosis, and other health concerns specific to Poicephalus species

The Senegal Parrot will give you its entire heart - on the condition that you earn it. This book shows you how to earn it, keep it, and avoid the bites along the way.
