In the second installment of the Starship Lucy series, life aboard the sentient Polovian starship Lucy continues to evolve in ways both extraordinary and deeply human. The crew-composed entirely of rescued children from Earth-has formed a complex society shaped by their shared trauma, newfound power, and Lucy's influence.
The story opens with a deeply personal milestone: Lizbet Porter celebrates her first real birthday, marking how far she has come from her brutal beginnings on Earth. Her wish for companionship foreshadows the emotional core of the novel-loneliness, belonging, and connection in a vast universe.
Meanwhile, Captain Bryan Landry faces a growing social dilemma aboard the Lucy. With a severe imbalance between female and male crew members, thousands of girls remain without partners, leading to declining morale. At Lucy's urging-and with the support of his wives-Bryan agrees to expand his already unconventional family, symbolizing a broader attempt to create stability and emotional fulfillment across the ship.
The central conflict begins when Lizbet is assigned her first away mission to a primitive, pre-industrial planet. Tasked with learning the native language for a potential first contact scenario, she observes a rural alien society that closely mirrors humanity's own dark ages-complete with superstition, hardship, and rigid belief systems centered around two moons: one worshiped as a god, the other feared as a devil.
While studying the locals under strict orders to remain unseen, Lizbet becomes fascinated with a lonely boy named Moku. As she learns his language and culture, she also recognizes a reflection of her own isolation. When Moku is attacked by a deadly native predator, Lizbet intervenes, saving his life-but in doing so, she accidentally reveals herself.
To Moku, she is not a savior, but a demon-an otherworldly being from the sky, defying everything his people believe about their world. Despite this, he is drawn to her, grateful and curious rather than fearful. Against orders, Lizbet makes the risky decision to communicate with him directly, accelerating her mission but jeopardizing its secrecy.
As their connection grows, Lizbet is forced to confront the consequences of her actions. Her presence threatens to disrupt an entire culture built on myth and fear, while her own longing for companionship clouds her judgment. What began as a mission of observation becomes something far more personal-and potentially dangerous.
Back aboard the Lucy, Bryan continues navigating the responsibilities of leadership, marriage, and the emotional well-being of his crew, unaware that Lizbet's actions may soon force a critical decision: whether to remain hidden observers... or become the very "demons" the planet fears.
