"A Warrior's Promise"

Gary Lee never thought he'd make it home from Iraq. Sometimes he wishes he hadn't. Haunted by the ghosts of war and drowning in the weight of survivor's guilt, he drifts through life in the heart of the city, a forgotten soldier in a war of his own making. Years of isolation, anger, and regret have left him broken, but he's trying to rebuild. He attends therapy and veterans' support groups, though he rarely speaks. The stories of others, soldiers just as lost as he is, keep him tethered to something real, but nothing can quiet the nightmares that still hunt him.

Then he meets Lena.

A tough, street-smart nine-year-old with more heart than most adults, Lena doesn't see a broken man. She sees a protector. Through sheer determination, she forces her way into Gary's lonely existence, showing up at the corner store where he buys his whiskey, sharing her ridiculous knock-knock jokes, and challenging his view of the world with every conversation. Despite his efforts to keep his distance, an unlikely friendship forms. She reminds him of the man he used to be, the one who fought for something bigger than himself.

For the first time in years, Gary feels like he has a purpose again.

Then Lena disappears.

The police write her off as another runaway, but Gary knows better. He's seen the shadows that lurk in the alleys, the predators who hunt in plain sight. The skills he tried to bury, the instincts, the tactics, the violence, come rushing back. With nothing but his training and sheer will, he plunges into the city's underbelly, tearing through gangs, corrupt officials, and human traffickers in a desperate race against time.

As the body count rises, Gary is forced to confront not only the monsters who took Lena but the demons inside his own mind. The deeper he digs, the more the lines blur between justice and vengeance, between the man he's trying to be and the warrior he swore he'd never become again.

The city is a battlefield and Gary is done retreating.

He made Lena a promise to always have her back. And this time, he's not fighting for his country. He's fighting for her.
