Joy Smith's no stranger to life's uncertainties but imagines life after high school graduation would be so bewildering. In 1957, Knollwood, Texas, most girls got married or while a few go to college. Joy, however, wants neither. She's caught between the security of working at her family's butcher shop and the desire for something more meaningful. As she searches for her next step, her path leads her right into unexpected new friendships that have questions of their own.

Growing up in New York City, Sally Garrett has always heard tales of Quail Crossings, but she never expected to see the vast fields and plains of Texas, let alone live there. With only a hope and a prayer, she moves her family west, plunging them into unfamiliar lifestyles. Though the move unsettles her children, Sally remains optimistic, hoping for a fresh start despite the resistance from those she loves the most.

Evalyn Smith once dreamed of the glitz and glamour of California, aspiring to be a costume designer for the movies. With that dream within reach she instead took responsibility for an orphaned infant. Now, as a pig farmer's wife and mother of four in Knollwood, she finds unexpected contentment. But when a figure from her past reappears, painful memories threaten to resurface sending her contentment into turmoil.

As the past and the present collide, Joy, Sally, and Evalyn are swept up in a whirlwind of regret, sorrow, and redemption. They must navigate their intertwined fates while holding onto the families they cherish.
