Christian Heresy: Gnosticism

Gnosticism was a religious movement that emerged in the early Christian era and was considered a heresy by the mainstream church. It was characterized by the belief in the knowledge (gnosis) of the divine and a dualism that separated the physical world from the spiritual world. Gnostics believed that the physical world was created by an evil deity and that only through acquiring secret knowledge could one achieve salvation and return to the true divine realm. This belief was in direct contrast to the orthodox Christian belief in the incarnation of Jesus and the redemption of the physical world through his death and resurrection.
